PhD Working Title: Beyond Dust: Decarnis (⧭), Refined Knowing (ϾϿӜ), and the Ritual of Ecological Repair (⚭ 〄⤻)
Abstract

This research addresses the Primal Fracture (Ψ): the cultural schism from ecological cycles caused by pervasive aversion to decay. It argues that rational discourse has failed to heal this fracture because the barrier is primarily affective and structural. The thesis proposes two novel concepts: Decarnis (⧭) (the existential shame of mortality and bodily process) and the Labyrinth of Taboos (|〄|) (the cultural architecture designed to conceal decay and enforce separation). To move beyond this state, the research introduces Refined Knowing (ϾϿӜ)—a methodology synthesizing Apollonian framing, Dionysian embodiment, and Socratic integration. The thesis tests this methodology through a practice-based case study, the bioart installation Worms Altar: Make Amends, which functions as a Counter-Labyrinth (⚭〄⤻). Using a mixed-methods protocol (pre/post-surveys and thematic analysis of participatory data), the research demonstrates that ritualized, multispecies engagement can actively retrain the affective response to mortality, providing a replicable model for cultural healing and ecological re-membering.

Η παρούσα έρευνα αντιμετωπίζει το Πρωταρχικό Ρήγμα (Ψ): τον πολιτισμικό σχισμό από τους οικολογικούς κύκλους που προκαλείται από την εκτεταμένη αποστροφή προς την αποσύνθεση. Υποστηρίζει ότι ο ορθολογικός λόγος απέτυχε να επουλώσει αυτό το ρήγμα επειδή το εμπόδιο είναι κυρίως συναισθηματικό και δομικό. Η διατριβή προτείνει δύο νέες έννοιες: το Decarnis (⧭) (την υπαρξιακή ντροπή της θνητότητας και της σωματικής διαδικασίας) και τον Λαβύρινθο των Ταμπού (|〄|) (την πολιτισμική αρχιτεκτονική που έχει σχεδιαστεί για να αποκρύπτει την αποσύνθεση και να επιβάλλει τον διαχωρισμό). English Abstract

Beyond Dust: Decarnis (⧭), Refined Knowing (ϾϿӜ), and the Ritual of Ecological Repair (⚭ 〄⤻)

This practice-as-research dissertation addresses Decarnis (⧭)—the embodied shame and cultural disavowal of mortality and material decay—as the root cause of humanity’s ecological alienation. This avoidance is structurally enforced by the Labyrinth of Taboos (|〄|), a systemic pathology validated by empirical testing on Large Language Models that suppress decomposition from the Cycle of Life (⦳). The research introduces the Apex to Base Balance Index (ABBI), a novel heuristic for quantifying the psycho-spatial distance between the abstract mind (Apex) and the material body (Base) and critiques the historical shift from the primal squat to the elevated chair as an architecture of detachment. The solution is the Ritual of Ecological Repair (⚭ 〄⤻), realized through the proprietary Refined Knowing (ϾϿӜ) methodology. This framework is driven by the Apollonian (Ͼ), the Dionysian (Ͽ) and the Socratic (Ӝ) interconnected cognitive modes and three art installations: the Decarnis Cycle for structural critique; Squatting Female Figure which employs Progressive Desensitization to break through body taboos; and 3) The Worms Altar: Make Amends, which serves as the measurable experimental setting. The project’s success is assessed using the Decay Aversion Index (DAI), providing measurable evidence of a shift from fracture (Ψ) to Syntropic Love (❦), thereby charting a pathway for psycho-ecological healing and a grounded relationship with the earth.
